Prickly Pear Ranch
Prickly Pear Ranch was founded in 1864, 12 years before Custer’s Last Stand and before gold was discovered in Last Chance Gulch (Helena). The main ranch has been in Nancy’s family since the turn of the century and is the 13th oldest homestead in Montana.  Prickly Pear Simmental is a family-operated ranch. In addition to Don and Nancy, their youngest son Gary is a partner.

They are charter members of both the Montana (#6) and the American Simmental Association (#174).  Don has been on the board of directors of both organizations. Don has also been involved in setting up cattle health, nutrition and breeding programs in Nigeria, Africa since 1989.  They have been sending steers to Nebraska for the last five years to get carcass data.  They have placed three of their herd sires (Montana Irish, Nophalt and Prime Star) in the ASA Carcass Evaluation Program where they  measure the bulls’ offspring’s carcass traits. These traits include marbling, carcass weight, percent retail cuts and tenderness.Their motto  through the years has been  “You can’t breed today’s cows to yesterdays’ bull and be in business tomorrow.”
