Acquired by the Northern Pacific Railroad in 1864, the land was logged in the 1980s before being sold to the partners of Moonlight Basin Ranch. Perhaps ironically, this recent logging actually laid the groundwork for the ecological renewal now underway. Clearing these dense, biologically uniform stands of lodgepole pine created meadows and grasslands that draw deer, elk, moose and other animals. Today, this unique valley's future is bright. Working in concert with conservation agencies, Moonlight Basin Ranch is developing a master plan to conserve this natural character-from protecting elk calving habitat to maintaining overall biodiversity. Originally consisting of 25,000 acres, Moonlight Basin Ranch’s vision has focused on placing nearly 85% of the Jack Creek Drainage into conservation easements, green space and wildlife corridors. They are approaching Their goal and aggressively exploring additional avenues to reach this milestone. Moonlight Basin Ranch’s efforts have been praised by conservation and development agencies alike and represent a model to protect Montana’s splendor. |
