The
Great Northern Brewing Company has been operating since 1995
in Whitefish, Montana.
The idea for Black Star Beer began a while back, when Minott Wessinger saw all the new microbrews coming out. He was interested in them, not just because he likes beer (which he does) but also because for over a hundred and fifty years, theWessingers have been one of the oldest brewing families in North America. Minott's great-great-grandfather, Henry Weinhard, founded one of the most renowned breweries in the West and, for five generations, the family's dedication to brewing quality beers has never faltered. The first thing they did was build a brewery that had all the integrity of an old-world brewery. Standing three stories tall, it includes a copper brew kettle, Lauter tun screens imported from Germany, a replica of the weather vane that once stood atop Henry Weinhard's brewery, and an old-fashioned brew-house tower designed so that their beers would be brewed with the traditional "gravity flow" method. The brewery also was designed to include a comfortable and friendly tasting room with an awesome view of the Big Mountain. They went to work, combining their brewers experience and education with Minott's own rather deep brewing knowledge. Together, after much brewing and much, much, much tasting (nice work if you can get it) they came up with the recipe for Black Star. In addition to Black Star Golden Lager, they are also brewing a variety of other distinctive new products. Right now, these include their new Amber Export, Black Lager, and Wheatfish from Whitefish, which the folks in Montana have tried and seem to like a lot. Check out their Web Site for more great pictures, Tour information, Downloads and merchandise that can be purchased over the Internet. |
