Blacktail Ranch is a 8,000 acre family-owned ranch located where the mountains meet the prairie, at the base of the East Front of the Continental Divide. Gus Rittel (Tag's grandfather) first homesteaded this ranch in 1886 and the Rittels have been in this valley ever since. This is a real Montana working ranch that offers vacation getaways to folks who are interested in sharing a part of their ranch life.

They are located 65 miles south of Great Falls, and 55 miles northwest of Helena. Glacier and Yellowstone national Parks are both a half-day drive away. The Helena National Forest borders the upper end of the ranch, making them truly the last place on the road.

Horseback riding is offered daily. Their string of paint horses and mules are diverse and able to accommodate the advanced as well as the beginning riders. They do not have a structured schedule and their flexibility allows you to ride as much or as little as you like. You may even opt for a three-day, two-night horseback ride to the top of the Continental Divide. Sleep in the log cabin, "The Hide Out," under the stars or in a tent. Wake up to the smell of coffee and bacon while horses nicker in the corral. Then ride to the top of the world and see what seems like forever. This is an unforgettable experience.

Cattle Drives offer you a chance to get a feel of the real West-Cowboy living and it could be the time of your life. Cattle drives are common occurrences at the Blacktail and you are welcome to help out. Throughout the season they are sorting cows, cutting out bulls and rotating pastures. Give them a call for more information on their cattle drives and "working" the cows with them.

Great Fishing opportunities abound at and around the Blacktail. The beautiful South Fork of the Dearborn River runs through the ranch and is home to rainbow trout, eastern brook trout, and in some very special spots native cutthroat. This is a small stream loaded with pan-size trout and is always a lot of fun to fish. The "blue ribbon" Missouri River is just 20 miles to the south and the not-yet-discovered Dearborn is a short distance away.
